In the movie "MOON CHILD", the person who played the young version of GACKT's protagonist Sho was a 12 year old Kanata Hongo. It's been 8 years since, and the two have forged a close relationship. GACKT's love for the now 20 year old Kanata, and Kanata's nervousness from beginning to end from his great admiration were so wonderful as to be charming.
Hongo: It's been half a year since I last saw GACKT-san. I've been invited to his live shows and stuff often and met him there, but I'm definitely still feeling tense now.
GACKT: Because you're thinking I'll throw you out if you say something? (laughs)
Hongo: No, not that (laughs).
GACKT: It's been 8 years since I first met Kanata. In the movie he plays my character as a child, and it was because in reality, 8 years ago Kanata resembled to a great extent how I looked when I was small, there was a strange feeling like "There is a child like this!" But because we didn't appear together in any scenes, the first time we met was at the wrap-up, wasn't it?
Hongo: Yes. I was an elementary school student, so I was nervous and timid because of that, but more than that, I thought I'd never be able to see him so genuine and close up, so I was really happy.
GACKT: I remember saying to you the first time we met, "Hey you, put on a good face. You're a handsome boy. I'm looking forward to your future".
Hongo: I think I remember (laughs).
GACKT: It might have been rude to tell him like that, but at the time I felt intuitively, "He's definitely going to be successful. He'll certainly leave his mark". That wasn't just me, but HYDE too, I think, felt the same thing. Therefore, I still keep in detailed contact, exchanging mails like "Are you well? How are you feeling?" and I think my feeling of wanting Kanata to succeed is contained in them.
Hongo: I almost cry when I receive the honor of those words from you (laughs).
GACKT: After the movie, we went around together on my live tour for about half a year and we were together all the time.
Hongo: Yes. At first, when I got the invitation to come to your show, I was like "Yay! It'll be great to see it," and went along cheerfully, but then I got told, "I want you to appear on stage during this song and was like "Wha?" and got reeeeally nervous (laughs). But it was a really good experience going around the whole country together. I became very close to all the dancers too. In the concert, there was a song where all the dancers wore cat costumes and danced in them, and when I said "That looks fun", GACKT-san said "Well, you can do it too" (laughs). It was really fun wearing a cat costume and dancing on the last day (laughs).
GACKT: When I do concerts, I create a single story out of them. So, in the songs that time, I wanted to present something like the heart of MOON CHILD's protagonist when he was a child on stage. While Kanata performed as my child self, I sung while being in sync with that. Back then, Kanata's mother toured with us as well, and she was terrible.
Hongo: It's because I was a kid.
GACKT: When the shows were over, I'd always talk to your mother.
Hongo: What, really? (laughs)
GACKT: I think she was a good mother. Kanata always ate at the same table as the dancers, so I talked to his mother about his future the whole time (laughs). What path should he take, what school should he go to, what kind of lifestyle she should let you lead. The tour was long, so I heard about it the whole time (laughs).
Hongo: Seriously!? That's awful (laughs). I'll have to tell her off for that. But I think she must have really wanted to know (laughs).
GACKT: So I said irresponsible things like, "If it were me, I'd do this", and, "You only live once, so it might be a good idea to do this" (laughs).
Hongo: You're going too far! GACKT-san, really from training on does everything full power. As a child, I felt "He's professional through and through". I'm sure this is what it really means to be first class. GACKT-san really is a man that can do anything, but I understand that's built on amazing hard work, and, it's embarrassing to say this in front of him but he's ridiculously cool. As a man, as a person, it's admiration upon admiration for me.
GACKT: When did you learn to say things like that? I don't remember teaching you that talk (laughs).
There's a strong sense of us being brothers with an age gap.
GACKT: That cute little Kanata quickly grew up, and when I think that he's 20 now, it's a strange feeling. My niece is about the same age, and I've talked with HYDE about it a lot, "It wouldn't be weird if we ourselves had kids this age" (laughs). But because we met him when he was 12, rather than a parental relationship, there's a strong sense of us being brothers with an age gap. So, I've thought for the last eight years that rather than tell him to work hard, it's more important to set an example for him of myself working hard. I've been looking forward to his maturation, and been thinking it'll be great when we can drink alcohol together, so I'm kinda happy.
Hongo: I'm really looking forward to going drinking with GACKT-san, too.
GACKT: I have to teach him little by little. It's best to start with tequila. Otherwise if you gradually make it stronger it will mess up your body (laughs). I myself started with awamori (a type of strong okinawan liquor).
Hongo: Ahahaha! I hope I don't cause GACKT-san any trouble.
GACKT: When I heard Kanata was 20, I remembered my own life at 20 years old, but up until I was 19, my heart and body were really a mess. But I met a certain person, and he told me "This is the first day of the rest of your life" (lit: Your own life is from now). 20 years old for me was being reborn anew, or thinking "I'll search for the purpose I was born for, that I exist for". I've told this to Kanata ages ago, but I said, "I think you're already beginning what I began when I was 20, and I wonder if you'll produce great results faster than I did". For example, there are things I possess that Kanata does not, right? Money and position and success, the more of those things you gain, there's something that is lost. That is the power of "I want to make dreams come true". People like Kanata, who are starting to chase their dreams from now on, have far and away more power to go towards their dreams, and an overwhelmingly greater number of them. I want him to work hard with that as his driving force. Dreams are brought to fruition by people.
Hongo: That's right. That's why I think I have to get myself together and work hard. That's what becoming an adult is.
Hongo: I haven't asked GACKT-san much about romance. Maybe our fields are different, or I've asked it but it didn't get added to my frame of reference (laughs).
GACKT: Hmm, I think my way of romance is not good. I take the path of suffering, so I don't want to recommend it. I'd like Kanata to be happy like a normal person (laughs).
Hongo: Hahahahaha!
GACKT: Actors like Kanata are of a type that meet people at school or when drinking and can fall in love normally, I think. They're people who can act out love in movies and stuff, but comprehend the difference between reality and an act. But musicians can't do romance normally (laughs). In the world of lyrics they write an incredible amount about romance, don't they? However, when they try to go about it in the real world, they're a rather unique and not entirely sane type of people (laughs). They're a type you shouldn't consult.
Hongo: I thought as much. My suspicions have been proven (laughs).
GACKT: From now on, our relationship is going to change. Even if I say, "Well then, shall I show you a bit of the gateway to adulthood?" it's embarrassing if you're sitting next to me drinking green tea and I'm the only one showing my disgraceful behavior (laughs). Cause from now on we can drink together.
Hongo: The gateway to adulthood, you say… (laughs)
GACKT: Where could that be? (laughs) There's an incredibly dark side. If you ask me to show you that there are places in the world so black, I'll show you countless of them (laughs). Afterward, I'll have to go get my head ripped off by your mother (laughs).
Hongo: But I think if I was with you, my mom would say, "I'm glad for that" and send me off calmly (laughs).
GACKT: Yeah, I'm pretty trusted, right?
Hongo: I think so (laughs). Cause my mom adores you too.
GACKT: I'm looking forward to having an equal relationship. Because even if we can't fill in the age gap, we can fill in the gap between our souls. In the past, if there was someone trying to surpass me, I'd get serious and struggle for dear life so that they couldn't. Now when they get close, I'm happy and think "Good luck". Recently I've started to wonder if that's what getting older means. But it's not objectionable, I'm really proud of the fact that I'm getting older. I'm not 40 yet, but I want to become the coolest 40 year old in the world. I think getting older is fun, or should I say, it'll be good if I can go on till I die like this. Therefore, even if it's just a few, I'll be very happy if I influence Kanata to have a few compass points, or goals like "I want to be this kind of 30 year old, this kind of 40 year old".
Hongo: GACKT-san has been kind to me since I was a child, and I've been able to feel that he's made me very important to him. To always have someone I can respect from the bottom of my heart close to me makes me feel truly blessed. To me, it's a very distant goal, but someday I want to be a cool adult like GACKT-san!
