LUNA SEA 30th Anniversary CROSS THE UNIVERSE -THE DAWN- at TOKYO GARDEN THEATER (28/29/30/5)

LUNA SEA held three back-to-back shows titled LUNA SEA 30th Anniversary CROSS THE UNIVERSE -THE DAWN- at TOKYO GARDEN THEATER on May 28th, 29th and 30th. The shows were originally scheduled for last May, but were postponed due to measures put in place to slow the spread of the coronavirus. The shows were held with a limited capacity crowd and various other infection prevention measures were put in place, such as a 20-minute intermission during each concert to ventilate the venue. Also, the shows were live streamed in various movie theaters in Japan, and broadcast worldwide online via Streaming + and ZAIKO. This report covers the show held on May 30th.

The first part of the show consisted of songs from the band’s latest album CROSS. They started the show with LUCA. Accompanied by the tender sounds of the guitars and drums, RYUICHI’s heartwarming vocals brightened up the fans’ mood. “Sing inside of your heart!”, RYUICHI gave a shout to the fans during the song. Next came Closer, which heated up the audience with J’s driving bassline, powerful guitar strokes from INORAN, high speed guitar shredding from SUGIZO, dynamic drumming from Shinya, and RYUICHI’s zealous vocals.

“We missed you, Tokyo!”, RYUICHI greeted the fans after the song. “We had the CAPACITY∞ show near this venue 22 years ago. We are fated to be here. Let’s make this venue our new home,” RYUICHI said. Later, J’s groovy bass riffs started Pulse. The fans began to clap, following INORAN’s lead. The band and their audience enjoyed setting themselves free during the song. The following number PHILIA thrilled the fans with its grand scale and breathtaking modulations. RYUICHI flawlessly delivered the lyrics utilizing his wide vocal range, demonstrating everything from shouts to beautiful falsetto. J also amazed the fans by playing the piano placed next to Shinya’s drum set. Applause filled the venue after the song.

“These three shows were originally the tour finale, but we are starting the tour from here instead. Of course, we have to follow the rules, but we all need music. Let’s share our emotions together,” RYUICHI said. Later, the band played The Song of the Cosmos 〜Higher and Higher〜, which is featured as the opening theme of “Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin”. The song’s cosmic soundscape, enhanced by the sparkling lights of the mirror balls and beaming stage lights, created a thrilling sense of ascension.

Later, the delicate sounds of the drum cymbal and guitar strumming changed the atmosphere as the show progressed to SILENCE. The haunting sounds of SUGIZO and INORAN’s guitars and the contrast of RYUICHI’s high-toned voice and J’s deep vocal interlude enhanced the solemn feel of the song. The combination of each sound created an explosive reaction towards the climax of the song, where RYUICHI delivered soul-shaking vocals that seemed to come from the very depths of his heart.

The band played Hold You Down towards the end of the first part. “Each day you are faced with a lot of things, and you’re probably having difficult times as well. Please forget about those things during our show and return to the place where you used to be, are led into, and also put your heart into. Please fully enjoy yourself,” RYUICHI said. THE BEYOND, the theme song for the 40th anniversary of “Mobile Suit Gundam”, closed the first part of the show. RYUICHI and the fans waved their hands together from left to right. The vocalist took a bow at the end of the song.

After the intermission, an arranged version of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata started to play to signal the start of the second part of the show, which consisted of the band’s classic songs. “Jesus, don’t you love me!?”, RYUICHI’s shout started JESUS off. During the song, excited the fans with his bass and vocal interlude. The following songs, DESIRETRUE BLUE, and IN MY DREAM, drove the audience into a frenzy. “It feels as if we are in an endless dream,” RYUICHI said.

However, the show came to a brief pause due to the breakdown of a speaker. While the staff were fixing the issue, RYUICHI spoke to the fans. “There are a lot of live venues across the nation that feel like home to us. Some are gone, and some are still waiting for us to return. One thing I realized during the period when we were not able to have live shows is that we absolutely need music. Music is not powerless because it can change our minds, and it can also unite us. United, we can overcome any difficulty. This show was postponed for a year. I am very thankful to you for choosing to come,” he said. “Please give a round of applause to Shinya, who made a successful comeback. What would we do without him?” The fans applauded Shinya for recovering from the coronavirus.

After the speaker was fixed, I for You started to play. The five band members conveyed their love to the fans through each sound they delivered. SUGIZO’s beautiful guitar solo helped everyone listening to heal from the long and hard days in separation and anxiety before this long-awaited moment of restoration. Finally, they launched into ROSIER. The band members unleashed their strong desire for a new beginning during the rebellious song. J’s vocal interlude and SUGIZO’s ascending guitar solo seemed to load the fans up with courage. The band closed the second part of the show with TONIGHT.

The blue lights of the fans’ smartphones created a fantastic view in the venue as the members came back to the stage for the encore. “Essential workers, health care personnel and a lot of other people are sustaining us. I think some of these people may be in this venue, or may be watching through the live stream. Let’s send our support to them,” RYUICHI said. Then, Make a vow started up. RYUICHI sang his heart out while playing his guitar. The blue lights swayed as fans waved their hands left and right to the song.

Afterwards, the band took time to introduce each member. Shinya, instead of talking, treated the fans to a superb drum solo. “Thank you for these three days. Finally, the tour has started. Let us prove that a live house is a safe place together,” J said. “Thank you!” INORAN gave the fans a shout. “There has never been a single cluster that has occurred in live venues. Let’s prove that they’re safe together. Music, art and culture do not stop. This is the start of our 33rd year. Let’s journey on together as long as we live. I love you,” said SUGIZO. “My band members said it all, so I do not have much to add. I love you very much, thank you!” RYUICHI said.

Then the band played WISH, which saw INORAN deliver a powerful backing chorus as if he was singing on behalf of all the fans watching. Finally, so tender… closed the show. Although the fans could not hold the hands of those seated next to them like they usually would, they jumped up together with the five band members. “See you again on the tour! Good night!”, J shouted before he left the stage. “Thank you!”, SUGIZO gave a shout to the fans without using a microphone. Then, he took a long bow at the center and left the stage as the fans’ applause filled the venue.
