SHOXX Sept 2004 Vol. 139 (Keyword Interview)

1. ZAKURO KATA NO YUUUTSU
~ Hospital ~Ruki: I've had problems with my spine ever since I was a child. [He has 'herniated disc' ;__;] It didn't used to hurt when I was small, but as I got older it became more painful. During my first year in high school I had to get it operated. I had always thought that anaesthetics would never work on me but I fell asleep the moment I got the injection, even faster than normal people. (laughs) Anyway, what I wanted to say is that they always tell you to call the nurse when you don't feel well, right? Then, when you call them because you are in too much pain, they always tell you to bear it. The dentist also tells you to raise your hand if you feel pain, but when you do, he doesn't stop at all, in fact, he tells you to put up with the pain a little longer. So why don't they just stop telling you such things.
Kai: I've heard this from my mother. I was still very small, so I don't remember anything. Once I bumped my head on the door. I was just laughing, like nothing happened, but suddenly blood was spurting from my head. I was hospitalized right away. Of course the wound got healed, but it feels like it still has an effect.
Uruha: The point is, 'it still has an effect!' (laughs)
- So the after-effects of this accident made you who you are now.
Kai: Let's not go into details! (laughs)
Aoi: I've been treated in hospital with the flu as an out-patient, but I've never been hospitalized. So I don't have any such experiences. Only that there was a hospital behind our house.
Uruha: I had a huge wart on my neck when I was small. It got taken off when I was 8. I got painkillers but I could see the doctor cutting it off with scissors. It was quite scary. You can still see the scar a little bit.
Reita: The first experience I had with hospitals was when I hurt my neck during the spring tour. My neck had to be fixed, I couldn't even get up. I told the nurse, "I'm in a band, you know". She gave me a chamber pot but it was kakko warui so I held it back. Next day when they told me I was all right, I ran straight to the toilet. It was the first pee in 20 hours, so I felt very relieved. (laughs)
Letter ~Aoi: When I get rice or veggie juice from home there's sometimes a letter in the parcel. When I read it, I really feel like going home and seeing my parents.
Uruha: I used to have a very bad relationship with my older sister when I was a teenager. We used to have very violent arguments. Then she graduated from high school and got a scholarship in the States. Once a letter came and she wrote that she was worried about me, something she never ever would have said to me. I felt very grateful. She got a child and came back to Japan. Now we're just like we were in the old times.
Reita: I'm very bad at writing. Recently I re-read some stuff I wrote in elementary shcool, but I really don't know what I was trying to say. I normally don't write letters. Even my e-mails only consist of 2-3 lines.
Ruki: Every time my parents got mad at me, I never apologized. When they fell asleep I would put a letter of apology on their pillow. Once we had a big argument and I left home. Again, I explained everything in a long letter. I still can't apologize personally to my parents, I write a letter instead.
Kai: Once I gave a carnation to my mom with a letter on mothers' day. She still has it and when she sometimes mentions it I get embarrassed.

2. ZETSU
Eros ~Reita: When I look at a woman, first I look at the back of the knee, the shoulders and the wrist. Also, recently I find photos of women holding a cherry in the mouth erotic . They are quite artistic, but I feel attracted by such erotic photos. I'm also someone who gets photographed often, so I also look at them from an experimental point of view.
Ruki: To me naked women['s photos] are not erotic. I check photos of models a lot, but it's simply that women are more beautiful than men, so I see those photos as art.
Uruha: That I don't find naked women erotic either...is not true! But I think it's more erotic when the [female body] is hidden. It's something that inspires your left brain. The more you can't see the more your imagination gets active. So to me 'eros' is a world of wild ideas and imagination. (laughs)
Aoi: Women are very picturesque, whatever they do. In the PV of 'Zakuro kata no yuuutsu' there's a scene with a woman crying. Just looking at her expression and her figure you feel tenderness. You want to hold her. It's something mysterious in humans.
Kai: To me eroticism is like Pandora's box, you're not allowed to open it.
Reita: But you open that box every night.
Kai: That's true...
Uruha: So it's not 'Pandora's box'?!
Kai: I think eros is the weak point of men. When they see a woman they find her erotic.
All: That's only you!
Kai: I find shy women erotic. I think some people know what I mean. I always feel this mysterious attraction towards shy women. Then the world of imagination takes over, like "I'd like to do this or that".
- What exactly would you like to do?
Kai: I'd like to keep that to myself.
- It's better, ne. Before you become a criminal.
Kai: What???
Anger ~Uruha: What makes me most angry is the lack of respect for life. There are many people recently who kill themselves so easily. I feel anger towards these people. I feel like telling them my opinion, not just leaving them alone.
Kai: Everybody has things that nobody else can understand. Once I went to the doctor because I had constant headaches. The doctor told me the result of the test. "There's nothing wrong with your brain. You just have sinusitis." And he laughed at me. He made it look like I'm stupid for not knowing this. I was very angry. Just like policemen. If you ask them the way, they answer you like you're stupid. I get mad about this because they could say it in a nice way too.

Reita: Once Ruki stayed at my place, we wanted to drive somewhere the next morning together. As we arrived at the parking lot, I saw that my maps were lying all over the passenger seat. I thought it strange. Then I opened the door and saw that all my CDs, everything was stolen! Once the tiers had been stolen, too. I wanted to let out my anger but I didn't know who did it. Anyway, I really can't forgive those guys!

Ruki: Recently Koreans have been kidnapped and killed. I felt really angry about this. Also when recently some people were talking badly about Mr. Koizumi [the prime minister]. It's the job of politicians to change Japan, for that we pay them tax, and then they argue on TV. I felt like hitting them.

Reita: There are many reasons to argue.

Ruki: But the result of such fighting is just that soft drinks or cigarettes get even more expensive.

Reita: That's where it ends up?

Ruki: I understand that if you don't pay taxes, the economy collapses. But the more you raise tobacco tax for example, the less people will buy cigarettes.

Reita: So it's good if there are more and more smokers.

Ruki: But who's causing all this? All of [those politicians] are at fault, that's why I'm mad.

Aoi: I don't get mad.

Ruki: How about the construction site next door?

Aoi: That you can't help, even if you keep getting mad about it.

Reita: I think that you are usually grumpy so you just don't notice anymore.

Manager: Yes, you get mad quite fast.

Aoi: I don't!

- Oh, he got mad!

Uruha: He's very hotheaded.

Aoi: When everybody's attacking me like this, I do get mad!
3. MISEINEN

Future ~Ruki: The future is interesting because you can't see it. I sometimes wonder what I would do if I could see my future. Would I give up, or would I still try to change it? I think you can change your future with your own efforts.

Kai: The future is like a white sheet of paper. It's interesting to see how much you can 'leave your mark' on that paper. Like love. It all starts with a white sheet - it's really intriguing what kind of color the two will paint that paper. [I didn't add these "poetic" expressions, Kai really talks like this!]

Reita: Something unexpected always happens. Maybe you'll die tomorrow. So I try to live each second to the fullest.

Uruha: I like to think about the future. I always try to imagine what happens next. It's fun. Or let's say, I have hope in the future.

Aoi: Nobody ever 'sees' the future, still everybody knows the meaning of that word. I feel the mystery of this universe in this word.
Youth ~Aoi: It's about how much you can achieve. Regardless of your age, youth is the time when you shine the most.

Kai: To me 'youth' is already in the past. Probably in ten years I will say the same about what I'm doing right now. But right now I still can't think like that, and I also don't want to see it as 'memories'. When thinking about 'youth' I remember when I was a teenager playing soccer.

Reita: I think 'youth' is when you get the most absorbed in something. So, for me, the time being in GazettE is my youth.

Uruha: Just like the way the word is written [with the kanji for aoi = "blue/green" and haru = "spring"], you do things in your youth without understanding. [Japanese also use the word "aoi" for "rookie"] So right now is not what I consider my youth yet. When I'm a gramps, I will probably see it that way though.

Ruki: In the lyrics of 'Miseinen' the word 'youth' appears several times. I think it's the time when you're not of age yet. ['Miseinen' means 'minor'] If you compare Gazette to the band I was in when I was a teenager, I didn't know much back then but I was just having fun. That was my youth, I think.
