Petit Brabancon Barks Interview with kyo - Part 2

 

—–There are 3 songs on the single (Double A side single “Koku/Kawaki”) and when I heard them I couldn’t help but be reminded of 90s nu-metal. Or rather, in short, like it’s in the same family as heavy metal or alternative bands such as Deftones, KORN, or Alice In Chains. It feels in line with bands like that.

京: That’s right. Everyone likes those bands.

—–So is that what the other 3 members have in common?

京: Well, yes. Well to put it simply, that’s right.

—–And this is also the type of musicianship you wanted for this band.

京: Yeah, I guess. When I talked with Miya before, we said something like “I’d really love to see yukihiro play something heavy”. Plus once you actually start getting into it the sound ends up gradually changing and each member adds something of their own, so I think we ended up doing whatever we felt like and it resulted in a sound that only this band could make.

—–I heard that antz and Takamatsu were recommended by yukihiro, so what did you think of them once you hear them play?

京: I thought they were interesting. Completely different from anything I’d heard before. Both their playing and phrases were really different. It’s really interesting.

—–All 3 songs on this release (Double A side single “Koku/Kawaki”) were written by Miya but did you give him any pointers on how to write them?

京: No, nothing in particular. Just vague stuff like things that sting, or things that aren’t warm, and such.

—–I see. It’s your third band so one would think it would have a bit more of a relaxed vibe, but I guess that’s not the case at all.

京: Yep.

—–It’s very intense, dark, and heavy. As expected, with kyo, you can’t really escape from that.

京: That’s true. I don’t really like straying from that path.

—–I understand that you worked on the singing and melody after hearing Miya’s demos.

京: I create all the melodies for DIR EN GREY and sukekiyo but this time on “Koku” and “OBEY”, I’m singing the melodies that Miya wrote. Right now we have about 13 songs, of which I made the melodies for 10. It came up that “I want a few that are easy to listen to”, so we ended up redoing those remaining 3 songs. For those 3 songs I purposefully decided to sing Miya’s melodies because I wanted to try something a little unusual, and singing someone else’s melodies was a novel experience for me. I figured we should try it, so I sang and combined the melodies with the original ones I had made.

—–By singing Miya’s melodies, did you discover anything new?

京: Weeeellll, maybe on “Koku”. It’s in a key that I’m not great with. It’s not super low, but it’s also not super high, but it’s also not a song where I can sing the chorus in a higher key so it goes to some really difficult notes. It was a pretty difficult song because of that, but I found it unexpectedly refreshing.

—–Besides that, the presence of your worldview is very pronounced in the lyrics.

京: Ah…well, about that…yes, it’s true. I never change, do I?

—–Does the outlook of the lyrics strongly reflect on your personal feelings, emotions, or daily thoughts?

京: Yes, it does. Well, I have a very low sense of self-worth, so my lyrics are always like that.

—–Even though you’ve done this for so long and had success?

京: No, I haven’t felt like I’ve succeeded even a single time.

—–Ah, you’ve said that before, haven’t you?

京: Yes. I don’t really have anything that I want. I don’t have a goal or anything like that. That’s why I never feel fulfilled, no matter what I do.

—–Isn’t it draining to keep going on without ever feeling a sense of fulfillment?

京: It’s very draining. But on the other hand, if I did feel a sense of satisfaction I wouldn’t be able to write lyrics like this.

—–I suppose that’s true. Because you are always like this, no matter whether it’s DIR EN GREY, sukekiyo, or Petit Brabancon, your inner thoughts are always strongly projected onto your lyrics.

京: Exactly. That’s why I’ve never had trouble writing lyrics.

Alright, on that slightly depressing note (never change, kyo)…that concludes Part 2! There is one more chunk of this big boi left so I will hopefully post Part 3 about 24 hours from now (unless I lose all will to live and instead decide to brutally murder my SO in Magic The Gathering -red/black deck ftw-).
