DIR EN GREY Live at the Sonar (06/01/2012)

While the line for DIR EN GREY at Baltimore’s Sonar wrapped around the building, once inside, the tension was built but still rather subdued. The small basement styled venue was only half full, with many attendees on couches or sitting on the concrete stairs rather than huddled before the stage. The Baltimore show was the mid-point of the North and South American tour, just a little over one year since their North American tour with Apocalyptica.

DIR EN GREY’s opening band, The Birthday Massacre, produced a very different rock sound than their Japanese counterparts, and seemed to be more suitable for an Evanescence concert. Nonetheless they had many fans. When the band left the stage, many fans also left, and the group before the stage shrunk a little in size. By the time DIR EN GREY took the stage, nearly thirty minutes after The Birthday Massacre departed, those waiting seemed to be impatient, and the crowd burst into screams as the smoke overtook the stage and one by one the band emerged, bathed in a blue light. All of the members were casually dressed in simple designed shirts and slacks except for Kyo, who was in a dark track suit. None of the members appeared to wear any makeup, and most of their hair was mildly teased.

In comparison to previous tours, DIR EN GREY’s show overall sounded like one giant song; the only distinguishable mark between songs was the brief pause in which screams and growled catcalls from the audience engulfed the silence. Throughout most of the concert, the band stood very still on the stage. Most of the activity came from Kyo, who moved around a little as he sang, as well as Toshiya, who sensually danced and continued to bob his head. Kaoru and Die stood steadily in place, but from time to time switched sides. Shinya was often difficult to see because of the dark lighting.

The crowd engaged in a various call backs, hand gestures and headbanging. During Kyo’s screaming and growling spells, it was as if there was no other sound in the room; everyone stood mesmerized and simply listened. Primarily using dark blue and red lighting, Kyo repeatedly climbed up on a box at the front of the stage, stripping down to just his track pants, singing and screaming. With his tattoos now exposed, each dark inking was outlined and his slow, almost puppet-like actions were well defined by the yellow light which shone upward onto his chest and face. Much of the lyrics were indistinguishable; Kyo’s voice sounded like gurgled shrieks and chanting murmurs. When he truly sang, his voice was clear and moving and as captivating as always.

For fans unfamiliar with DIR EN GREY’s new music, this show was probably a letdown. Compared to previous tours, the show was uninspiring and did not show DIR EN GREY’s true musical talent nor their true charisma and character. The performance simply didn’t show why DIR EN GREY got where they were today, and did not live up to all those anxious fans who had come to visit them.

While there were many fans that enjoyed themselves, headbanging and crowd surfing, there was just still something missing from the show, and that was evidenced by the look in so many faces – faces which seemed, even in the end, to be waiting for something more.
