—–I see. About the band’s name, it seems to come from the name of a dog breed.
京: I didn’t want a name that was too cool or a joke. There are a few breeds of dogs that I like, so I put them forward.
—–And you actually own a dog, it seems.
京: Ah, yes I do. It’s a breed similar to the “Petit Brabancon” breed.
—–I see. What is it that you find charming about dogs?
京: Well…I wonder. When you get home they come to greet you, they sleep next to you, and they stay close by your side. They are so healing.
—–However, at first glance, that name gives a very different impression of the band’s musicality, outlook, and such.
京: “Petit Brabancon” is a small breed but it seems like the kind of dog that howls loudly, or rather one that will keep on fighting with all its might even when it’s worn out. The name of a stronger breed might have been better, but that wouldn’t be very interesting. That’s why I purposefully chose a small and cute, but rebellious dog…it’s more fitting for me.
—–Those traits seem to overlap with what you mentioned before about never feeling fulfilled, don’t they?
京: Yeah they might.
—–Small dogs with a rebellious nature seem to align with your personality more so than large dogs with a commanding presence…
京: Yeah, when you put it like that.
—–I see. Now that you’ve formed this band, do you have a vision for the future, a goal you’d like to reach, or anything like that?
京: No, not really. I pretty much just want to have fun making music with the other band members. I think it would be nice to just make music that everyone is satisfied with, avoid any discord, and just enjoy making noise.
—–You really don’t want anything (laughs).
京: By now, in DIR EN GREY each member pretty much knows their role without it needing to be said. I’m not the leader or anything, but when I say what I want, Kaoru makes it happen. There’s that kind of system. But with Petit Brabancon we don’t have that kind of understanding yet. It’s partly because I haven’t yet played with all the members, and partly because there are things that I haven’t fully grasped, but that’s exactly what makes it fun. We can talk about what we don’t understand or if we aren’t sure about something, so far, I’m having fun.
—–You’re also able to work with yukihiro, who you’ve admired for a long time.
京: Right, that’s why I want to get everyone together soon. To put it simply, being able to sing in front of yukihiro makes me very happy. I think I’m having the same amount of fun as the fans. He’s a really special member so I hope that the audience will also genuinely have fun seeing us play.
