Arena 37°C August 2009- Travel Interview

-Does GACKT like travel?

"Love it!"

-At what times do you start to feel like going on a trip?

"This morning!"

- This...morning?

"This morning, there were a lot of annoying things, and I was really going to lose my temper.  So, while I was in the shower, I thought I might blow off the days work and go on a trip (laughs)"

-I'm glad you corrected my way of thinking.

"I was seriously thinking about it.  I definitely don't usually do things like blow off work, right?  I was really snapping.  There was the stuff before the live, and I think I was anxious about that.  The recording was still going on the whole time too.  To calm down the anger...I was thinking of going to Ogata (Ken)'s grave."

[Not deciding a target.  The essence of GACKT's travelling is a habit of wandering.]

-When was the first time you did something that could be called travel, and where did you go?

"I think my first trip was running away from home when I was a child.  Because I was about middle school age (about 12-15), I'd often suddenly jump on a train and go as far as I could, always staring out the window at the scenery.  But the point wasn't to look out the window.  While I was looking out the window, I think I was sorting things out in my head and calming myself down.  I think it was because I had a habit of wandering from the start.  If I went to the terminus, I'd hang around that area for a while, and then go home... I did that a lot.  Even since coming to Tokyo.  When I got the feeling, I'd go to Yokosuka, Gunma, Yamanashi, Shizuoka, all the time.

-You've gone as far as Kyoto on a whim.

"As for Kyoto, I felt like seeing the night scenery.  So when I got annoyed at something, and thought "I want to see the night scenery!" I'd go out in the middle of the night on a whim.  Because when it's night time, you can go in no time at all."

-Although I think you're speeding a fair bit.

"Yeah (laughs).  But when I arrive in Kyoto and see the scenery, I return with my heart calmed down.  When I used to ride a motorbike, really, I went to lots of places I don't even know why.  Because I was rushing along without a goal, not knowing where I would come to, I couldn't return.  It wasn't as convenient as it is now.

-There was no GPS, right?

"It was a motorbike, so there wasn't.  If you went out into the countryside, there were no convenience stores, so you'd go round and round the same place, not knowing, camping...there was a lot of that too."

[No travel preparations!  Once you've decided, take your passport and go to the airport.]

- What do you take on a trip?

"Nothing at all.  Even when I go overseas, only my passport.  Of course if I'm going overseas for work or a purpose, I'll pack properly, but when I feel like "Aaaaahhh!" and I suddenly fly off, even when I'm going overseas, I just take my passport in my pocket.  At the airport I buy a ticket for an empty seat and I get on."

- It's better to buy the stuff you need while you're there, right?

"Right.  I buy everything there.  As soon as I arrive, because everyone's probably worried, first I call the office.  "Ah, I'm in France" or "I'm in Taiwan".  Of course, I can't go to places like the Middle East without warning (laughs).  Mostly I go to Europe a lot.  Because I'm used to going to France, I'm always suddenly going there.  When I feel like "Aaaaahhh!!!" I go to France (laughs)"

[It's a little dangerous, but really it's useful, GACKT's style of travelling]

- GACKT, please tell us your recommended way of taking an enjoyable trip overseas.

"Firstly, you definitely need money.  Because if you don't have money, you'll be anxious.  If you've got money, you can do just about anything.  Then, when you go overseas, what you have to do before anything else is to call out to the opposite sex.  This is very important!  Really important!  When you call out to the opposite sex, because it's okay even if you're on your own, you can find a girl to become friends with."

- Is someone of the same sex no good?

"It's better if they're the opposite.  If they're the same sex, you can go along easily.  If they're the same sex, isn't it easy to talk too?  You'll fall into a habit of being comfortable, and even though they're the same sex, you'll choose a comfortable person.  It won't be a young person, more of a older one."

- Somehow, a person who'll kindly see troubles for you? (laughs)

"Right.  It's no good because you called out to them with the assumption they'd steadily help you.  Because even among the opposite sex, I choose someone with high hurdles to overcome (laughs)"

- It's okay if it's a guy, but isn't it dangerous for a girl to call out recklessly?

"Isn't it like that even in Japan!  If you think it's good and call out to the opposite sex, you can carry them and take them as far as you like.  Whether that partner is a young girl or an old man, the chance of it being dangerous is the same"

- Well, probably...

"Right?  Isn't that entirely your own risk?  On the contrary, you can't be careless just because they're the same sex.  They could steal everything you have.  That's a risk you took when you decided to travel.  People of the opposite sex might have peace of mind because you're cautious.  So you might encounter them there, right?  For example, if you started to like your companion and thought you wouldn't mind having sex with them, you should.  Because life spreads out from there.  You might even move overseas.  Just because of one meeting.  Girls who have never called out while in Japan can do it if they're overseas...it's that kind of situation, right?  Because if you call out "Yes!", your partner will respond, "Yes!"  If you call out "Yes!" in Japan, they'll look at you weird and say "What the hell is with that person!? (laughs)"

- Because there are different ethnicities and customs, it's often said that you need to be careful, isn't it?

"I think you shouldn't think about it too much.  If you're thinking "Thank you" then you'll say "Thank you" with that feeling in it.  If you're thinking it's unpleasant, then you'll clearly say so.  If you can say that properly, you can make most things clear."

- What about things like prejudices?

"Well, to my thinking, Japanese people are unique.  Japan is, well, strictly speaking it isn't, but, post year 2000, we haven't been invaded by other races, right?  Japan is the only country in the world that continues to be racially homogeneous.  So when Japanese people are confronted by people of other races, they're fastidious.  It's Japanese people's prejudice.  Because places like Europe are made up of adjoining countries, they have a history of invasion dating back to the Roman Empire.  So when there are different races of people, or people who speak different languages, there isn't much resistance.  Things like racial prejudices mostly don't exist!"

[Overwhelmingly, romance goes well between people who can't exchange words!]

- What do you do about the language barrier?

"You shouldn't worry about that.  Everyone worrying about things like the language barrier aren't seeking meetings.  There's no people who'd say they can't talk in Hakata because they're from Aomori, right?  If you go overseas, it will happen one way or the other.  You'll be okay with gestures.  That's how it is.  It's not that you can convey feelings because you communicate with words, rather, because you'll try harder to convey your feelings the less you can use words, romance goes overwhelmingly well between the people that do this.  Therefore, there are a lot of international couples who fail after becoming able to understand each other.  Isn't it interesting?  It's because when they couldn't use words, they tried their very hardest to communicate.  But when they became able to speak, because they rely on words, they neglect their feelings."

- Words are a funny thing, aren't they.  They sometimes lie.

"When you can't talk, you can't lie, and it can't be understood that you're insincere"

[There are a lot of failures and bad travel experiences.  People are unexpectedly survivors]

- Do you have any travel horror stories?

"I've got quite a few.  To do with food, breaking teeth..."

- Yes?

"When I was eating oysters at a Chinese restaurant, a stone got in.  I bit down on it and my tooth broke.  I was like "Oi, Oi" (laughs).  Then, when I complained to the restaurant people that there was a rock in my oysters, they listened with an unconcerned look on their faces (laughs)"

- And as for scary situations?

"Countless times.  Fights, muggers..."

- You were mugged!?

"I have been.  They came up from behind me, they got away with it (laughs).  But of course it was because the chance they were carrying a handgun was high... I've had a lot of fights, I've been in accidents, I've been bedridden due to illness.  That's experience too.  Humans are a thing that can unexpectedly survive any situation.  Tougher than I thought!"

- GACKT, are there any countries you want to try going to from now on?

"I want to go to the Middle East.  I want to go to the UAE and Israel.  I want to go to Iraq and Iran too!  Bosnia and Slovakia, Serbia, Tunisia, I want to go there as well.  They're full of beautiful women~.  I want to know what the beautiful women of the world are like.  Israel is the country with the most beautiful women.  I want to go to El Salem~~~~!!!  Recently, a picture came out of Israel's female soldiers.  They were all amazingly pretty.  I thought, I have to go (laughs)"

- Is there anywhere in Japan you want to go?

"I want to go to all the islands around mainland Japan.  I want to go see all of the Okinawan archipelago.  Iriomote Island, Hateruma Island...Ishigaki Island, I haven't been to those either.  Conversely, travelling domestically is more inconvenient.  I hate taking boats."
