excite: When did you write the first song for your 20th anniversary “GOOD LUCK MY WAY”?
tetsuya: From January 13th midnight until early morning of the 14th of this year. It was the night after we finished the ZEPP TOKYO live during my solo tour (“TETSUYA TOUR 2011 ‘COME ON! FEEL THE LIGHT!'”) (bitter laugh). I think it might’ve been our third show. After the live, I didn’t go out with the others to celebrate or eat and went straight home. It was the day when the AFC Asia Cup game against Seria was aired in the middle of the night. I watched that and then it came from there. I was really tired so I wanted to go to sleep (laughs).
excite: But you were still able to.
tetsuya: This song sounds like TETSUYA, right? It was during my solo so I was writing it without a clue of whether this was all caps TETSUYA or lower case tetsuya (laughs). Well, I don’t really separate the two, but I just thought I’d say that (laughs).
excite: Was this single originally composed as the theme song for the movie “Koutetsu no Renkin Jutsushi Nageki no oka (Milos) no Seinaru Hoshi [= Full Metal Alchemist]” ?
tetsuya: Yes. It’s a song that I wrote after we received the offer.
excite: Then, the tie-up came before the 20th anniversary.
tetsuya: For me, it was both. I felt a sense of duty for it being the first piece for our 20th anniversary. There wasn’t a specific demand from the movie side of how they wanted us to write the song.
excite: With “READY STEADY GO”, “Link”, and this piece, it seems that you are in charge of “Hagaren” (Full Metal Alchemist).
tetsuya: The Hagaren team nominates me a lot. It seems the first “READY STEADY GO” was well received.
excite: Yes, this song might have the same feel as “READY STEADY GO.”
tetsuya: As the first song to be released on our 20th anniversary, I wanted to create a song with a lot of energy, so it’s good that you say that.
excite: The song is the 2011 version [of L’Arc], but anyone who hears this will know, “Oh, this is L’Arc~en~Ciel.” It’s a great number as the opener for your 20th anniversary. Were you thinking about that as you were composing?
tetsuya: I… was. The energy and force that I just mentioned is “L’Arc~en~Ciel-ness.” I left in some of the reminiscent sound that’ll make [fans go] “Ahh, that’s it, that’s it,” but I have to keep moving forward so I also incorporated some new things. I don’t mean to brag, but I think it’s well done. After doing this for 20 years, even though [you’re the musician], you start to catch on to how the public sees you and what they want from you.
excite: Then, you must have had some sense of duty. Like, “Leave the first single of our 20th anniversary to me, who understands the L’Arc~en~Ciel-ness that the public desires!”
tetsuya: No. I’m not normally one to go forward and be like, “Me, me!” I don’t really like to butt in. It just happened to be that I wrote the song this time, and if the other members wrote a song like that, then it’s not necessary for me to.
excite: As expected from a sensible man (laughs). Still, it is the perfect first song for a 20th anniversary.
tetsuya: In some sense, yes. But if we thought differently, I think there was a much different approach we could have taken.
excite: No, no, no. It’s your 20th anniversary year after you’ve all done solo work, so anything other than a song that represents the “commonly-known L’Arc~en~Ciel” is unthinkable. So I think the “in some sense” that you mentioned was the right answer.
tetsuya: Thank you. Maybe I was unknowingly incorporating the smiling faces of our fans from “L’A HAPPY NEW YEAR!” I had a chance to get closer to my fans during my solo tour, too.
excite: I see. Then, was this a song influenced by your first live performance this year?
tetsuya: There are a lot of people I’ve met after I started playing music and a band. That means there would have been a lot of people I wouldn’t have met if I wasn’t doing music. I came to Tokyo for the first time because of L’Arc~en~Ciel. Someone who hadn’t gone to Tokyo until then has now gone to most prefectures. If I wasn’t in L’Arc~en~Ciel, I probably would have never gone to the places I’ve been overseas. When I thought about that, about all of the people I’ve met — with an appreciation for our fans, our staff, and the band members as the underlying theme, I wrote on my wall. “Straight on to Todai”[=University of Tokyo].
excite: You were putting pressure on yourself for composing during entrance exam season (laughs).
tetsuya: Yes. That’s pretty much how I finished the demo. With TETSUYA, my partner Murohime-kun plays a 7-string guitar. So, I had a 7-string guitar in a place within reach during composition. And I also create the demo for this song by creating a guitar riff with 7 strings. It’s a 7-string sound range.
excite: Was the gorgeous strings and brass arrangement there from the beginning, too?
tetsuya: Okano-san (Hajime, producer) was the one who brought up adding brass when we were in the stage of pre-production. We had Nishihira-san (Akira, arranger) arrange it. I had something to guide the strings in the demo, but I had it brushed up by him. The strings and brass were both live when we recorded.
excite: The Music Clip has an approximately one-minute strings part before the guitar arpeggio intro.
tetsuya: In the future, we might include it as an album version, and it might be good to start it with the strings part during a live.
excite: The coupling song is another one of the P’UNK~EN~CIEL series, but this time’s “metropolis -2011-” is also arranged by tetsuya-san.
tetsuya: No, it’s by T.E.Z P’UNK (laughs). When I thought about what I wanted to sing, I thought “metropolis.” I arranged it around the second half of February. The arranger for P’UNK is rotation based. And it just happened to be my turn. I thought, “Why does everything come to me at a busy time like this!” Well, I bet I’m being tested since I’m the one that created this band 20 years ago. So it all comes back to me.
excite: So, your 20th anniversary year has started.
tetsuya: I’m sure everyone thinks that the 20th L’Anniversary year began on January 1 and ends December 31, but the band’s 20th anniversary is on May 30. So, it is our 20th L’Anniversary year until May 2012.
