excite: What was your first impression of “GOOD LUCK MY WAY” after you heard tetsuya-san’s demo?
yukihiro: I thought it was tetsuya-kun-like.
excite: What about the arrangement?
yukihiro: It seemed pretty complete from the demo stage. It was like the only thing left was hyde-kun’s vocals.
excite: How was the rhythm arrangement?
yukihiro: There was a suggestion to lower the BPM, so we gave it a try. We lowered the BPM from 150 to 146. I remember we lowered it by at least 4.
excite: Did that change how the rhythm sounds?
yukihiro: Yes. It got rid of the excess rushed feeling and I think it actually brought out the speedy feel more. It’s not just fast. When I first heard it, I thought, “Whoa, it’s fast.” The phrases were complex and there are a lot of developments.
excite: The guitar solo part’s rhythm pattern is pretty fancy.
yukihiro: The length was like that from the beginning, but I didn’t think I would hold up. Well, I’m only going daka-daka. So I’m not doing something difficult (laughs).
excite: I think there were a lot of detailed fills crammed in throughout the song. The 2-beat part especially reminds me of “READY STEADY GO”‘s punkish rhythm.
yukihiro: It was even more similar in the beginning. So I thought we should change one or the other, the rhythm pattern or the tempo. Okano-san asked me, “Can you keep repeating the pattern ‘dokkan-do-do-dan’?” I answered, “Well, with this tempo…” and did it anyway (laughs).
excite: I personally felt it was very punk. The song in its entirety is really pop but the beat is punk.
yukihiro: I had a difficult time with it. In my memory, it only took me 3 or 4 takes, but when I asked afterward, it seems we took 15 or 16 takes. When I asked, “Did I really drum that much?” then they answered, “You got pissed off 2 or 3 times in between” (laughs). I just remembered that I broke a stick once. If there are 16 takes left, then I think I’ve drummed double that amount. Since I stopped in the middle and stuff.
excite: I’d like to hear more about how you changed how you hold your drumsticks before this year’s “20th L’Anniversary” live.
yukihiro: Yes, I did. I wasn’t conscious of it at all before. I just thought I’d do whatever was easiest for myself. But I got stuck, and when I looked at a lot of people’s instructional videos, they’re holding their sticks shorter.
excite: Like the stick end is sticking out of your hand.
yukihiro: Yes, like they’re holding it with some left over. I was holding it entirely with my hand. So I thought, huh? Then let’s give it a try.
excite: So you had been drumming using your own methods?
yukihiro: It was very much my own. I think I wasn’t hitting the drum that strongly and was more like swinging it around. Like I was using centrifugal force to drum. Right now, now that I’m holding it higher, I think I can pick up the pound after I hit the drum and keep control (laughs).
excite: Changing how you hold your drumsticks must change the feel when you’re drumming?
yukihiro: But I didn’t drum at all during my solo work. So conversely, how should I say it, I thought it was a good opportunity to start over. Like I’ve probably gotten rid of weird habits. Although, I did give this kind of stuff a try during our last tour (【TOUR 2008 L’7~Trans ASIA via PARIS~】).
excite: And this must have influenced your drumset?
yukihiro: I re-set my drum set many times. I recorded “GOOD LUCK MY WAY” with my last set-up, but I completely set up my drums over again. It’s finally coming together now.
excite: But it must be a huge change for a drummer. So it seems like a big change at a timing like this.
yukihiro: Yes. But it’s all good. Since I realized, “Ah, that’s how you hold it.” So I think I’ve improved a bit. Of course, I don’t think I’ve gone beyond good.
excite: Hahaha (laughs). And what about the coupling song, “metropolis-2011-” (P’UNK~EN~CIEL)? Any specific approaches to playing bass?
yukihiro: I don’t have any (laughs). I always think, please make it an easy phrase, please be all roots. Since we only get 3 takes for P’UNK. I record with ken-chan’s drums. It’s like, when ken-chan becomes exhausted, we record the bass one more time. If I’m not responsible for arrangement, I just do it carefree.
excite: The original song “metropolis” is the coupling song for “winter fall” (released Jan. 1998), whic is the first piece L’Arc~en~Ciel has released after you joined officially.
yukihiro: Yes. In “metropolis,” we only took like one or two measures and then we made a loop using a sampler. Regarding “winter fall,” I thought, “So this is how ken-chan’s 8 beat is.” It was refreshing. If the 8-beat was at a tempo like that, I would have had a groove with a more vertically divided 8 beat [=as in each note would be more clearly defined??]. Like, it’s more punk-ish. I think if other instruments were to do palm mutes, then it’d turn out like that too, but “winter fall” isn’t like that.
excite: I have the impression that its flow is pretty relaxed. The song itself is grand and has a romantic mood. From that, it must have given you a hint, “I see, this is the kind of band they are.”
yukihiro: Yes. Like, “Hehhh.” [as in “ohhhh”] Also, “winter fall” is the only song where I’m not playing on my own drumset. There was a drum tuner, and I used the drums that he brought. I thought, “I’m never going to do something like this again” (laughs). It was so hard to drum.
excite: Why did you use a different drumset?
yukihiro: I think it was because of the tone. I basically think, “I’m fine as long as my drums can create the coolest sound.” But at the time, I was testing different snare drums and had 2 or 3 drumsets ready. That made it really difficult (laughs). After that, I haven’t done something like that. Depending on the song, there are times when I speak with the engineer, and there are times when the composer’s opinion is taken into account, but basically, when we record drums, it’s fine if the sound is good. The rest is left to the others.
excite: Lastly, can you tell me about how you feel about where L’Arc~en~Ciel is headed after “GOOD LUCK MY WAY”?
yukihiro: We are composing. After the lives, we’ll probably start production.
excite: As one of the composers, what kind of mode are you currently in?
yukihiro: It’s a secret.
yukihiro: I thought it was tetsuya-kun-like.
