Music Shelf Interview: TORA

Tora's Keyword 1: Alice Nine

Is this about the band's name? When we were formed, we entered a stall for set meals, and so it's likealright, let's decide on a band name togethersomething like that, but everyone couldn't think of anything (laughs), only Shou came up with the name 「アリス九號」.

Personally, i'm not so picky about the band's name, but it wont work if it's simply a cool-sounding name, there's also the need to consider if the combination of katakan and kanji is out of place or not, and the name should be one that you can't forget after seeing it once, and so when we heard the name [that Shou brought forth] everyone unanimously said isn't that good!and so we decided on that name. Looking back at the name again, i think it was a good one.

And recently we've changed the name to English alphabets, the things that we want to do after 5 years have increased, and we've composed quite a bit of songs; we want to advance more, then we changed the name to that of english alphabets. Accompanying that, whether it's our songs, the band or our increasing range, we're on an evolving pattern so to speak.

Tora's Keyowrd 2: Tour/Travel

A solo trip is lonely so i don't travel by myself. Before i entered the band, there weren't any things like traveling or fields trips during my school days. That's why I'm thankful for being in the band, because i was able able to travel around the Japan, and absorb the different atmospheres of each place.

As expected when we do activities in the heart of Tokyo, we try to convey the feelings You've come! as much as possible as a response to the audience who has been waiting from all over the country. The audience from the countryside always give very loud core reactions. I'll be really thankful if they studied a lot when coming here.

if we're considering the tour, at the beginning, we packed ourselves tightly in a car we drive ourselves, the livehouses at the places we drove to are relatively small, i remembered it was a repetitive cycle of doing lives-traveling-doing lives-traveling. But it was both tough and fun at the same time. Even now, although smaller values means a smaller audience, it was really more enjoyable. This was something that we have like from the past; we're not concerned about the size of the venue or the turnout, whatever the circumstances i think it's just good enough to have fun.

That being the case, isn't it good to travel with members and stuff included to places together.

Tora's Keyword 3: Combination

This is hard ne. We had our individual stances, so we can't proceed without a goal in mind, as expected there's the method of song composition, the determination to perform, the definition of the quality of our surroundings and the expressions we want to portray; so i guess we are combination that managed to put all of that in order together.

From the time we formed, 5 years have passed, and so i think that there are things that we can finally do. But i don't mean that it's not important that we spend more time together. Usually when we're together, won't we gradually become similar to each other's feel, and from there understand each other. If we're just friends who meet up once in a while, it won't work out. However, it doesn't mean that if we get together we have to stick to talking about music, i think it's also important to talk about useless things like how we talked in our shool days.

My position in the band、、、what can it be, (using soccer as analogy) if Nao is the goalkeeper, then I'm probably the defensive midfielder (laughs). Basically, I will be looking downward preparing in advance at the pitch, and sometimes there'll be a scene where a shoot is hit over there. [i can't understand this analogy or maybe i just mistranslated the whole thing T____________T]

Tora's Keyword 4: Audience

Personally, from an audience's point of view, i don't really have the experience of watching a live by a japanese artist, but sometimes I've been to overseas artists' lives; the feeling of watching overseas artist perform, for example the feeling of being a male fan of a male artist, it's a different feel from a female fan's way of liking that artist. that's why for the way i view things, when i wonder if everyone else thinks the same way as i do, there's lot of different meanings to it、、、ah, this is a difficult theme ne.

About the visual kei part, there are quite a lot of overwhelming female fans, personally I'm happy about this but that's not the part that I think about first. Rather, I consider if I'm a male fan, I often think about how i can be someone i like when i see myself on stage. That's why without fail, i consider how i will appear on stage when I'm part of the audience at the side of the guest seatings off the stage, so i'm really always consciously thinking deeply into this. With that, I'll be glad if we can receive comments on how the male fans feel about us.

Tora's Keyword 5: Visual Kei

Visual kei is a really difficult term ne. For me, ever since i was aware of things around me, the term visual kei had already existed and from the past i think I had an image of what visual kei is, but visual kei in itself is constantly evolving, but it is also a term that stops somewhere in society.[meaning it dosent exist in certain parts of the world] For me i dont really mind that part too much, standing on the stage feeling sparkly [he used kira kira *-*] is somethin i like, if putting on make up is what's called visual kei, i don't mind doing that at all, and i don't really compose songs while being consciously aware of visual kei. Conversely i don't really know what i means to do things while being conscious of being in visual kei.

This is just my opinion, i guess it's often that japanese musicians admire overseas musicians, so they will want to be able to match up with them. But japanese people don't really tend to compare the outlines of facial features to small details, so they think about how they want to reflect themselves on stage, putting on make up, putting on flashy costumes, and try to convey the features that they won't lose to foreigners. I wonder if that's how it all [visual kei] started. Recently there are also people who try capture what's like the "japanese culture", i simply think "this kind of people have increased too much", but when foreigners see the way people cosplay, i wonder if that's how they captured the feeling of a maid cafe. [maid cafes can be found in quite a lot of places all over the world]. Of course there are parts that are similar and parts that are different. If we take out the kei [literally means type or system] and just talking about the "visual", i will say it's how you firmly show the unqiue appeal of the character, in other words, it's not just the usage of make up; how to portray the personality is also something to always think about.

Tora's Keyword 6: Film/Story

Since elementary school, I've been thinking of my own stories and putting them into manga; I also wrote the scipt for a play during a school festival, i guess i like thinking up of my own stories. i don't really have the skills etc for filming, so i take note on how to make practical use of the tools available to tell the story. in actuality i simply used the camera and film, if the compilation is simple, i will use my own laptop to do it.

I like films. it's not like this over here, if it's this actor, i will..., instinctive supervision like these are quite common. Also, since a long time ago, I've loved historical dramas. but isnt there the rewarding-good-punishing-evil pattern in historical dramas. Someday, somehow i will like to think of a story that has not appeared before [in historical dramas].

Tora's Keyword 7: Yourself 5 years from now

Well even though i said that i want to make a film wih a story that has not appeared in historical dramas before but to do that after 5 years is still a little too fast (laughs). Seriously thinking, I will like to be able to stand out out from the current visual kei scene. I want to go beyond our current selves and be the "only one". I'm not talking about being in isolation or underground, it's something like being able to send out your existence while facing the outside world, and being able to go on without staying at a single stage. Personally I'm constantly eager for something, living a life while constantly thinking that something is not enough. Therefore i think after 5 years there will be many more different things that i want to get my hands on.

Secret Interview

[Song composition]

It's hard to create a song. I've been composing songs even before i entered a band, at first i don't really understand how to go about creating a song, so i just hum the tune, and after that I started using chords and got used to that kind of standard, but because you can create any kind of songs, there are times where i wont know what is good to create. Also, for my criteria of creating a songs, i think an important prerequisite to stress on is to see if the melody line matches with the vocal's voice, instrument wise, an important point is on how to be able to convey different kinds of sounds from the instruments. Personally, I like the band's songs, I generally do things the way i want it done, but maintaining the entire balance is something that i often bear in mind.

By the way, Alice nine compose the song first and from there Shou delivers the lyrics.

[Aspiration]

I don't want to do the same things as other people, and i also don't want be like a particular someone, if that's the case if i do things that no one else do, if it becomes impossible, i can choose the safe route rather than being defeated.

That's why i don't really have a person that i admire so much that i aim for. If we're talking about bands, within visual kei, there were no such existence in my life even until now.

[An item that is indispensable in your everyday life]

For me, I'm the type tp not want to bring a bag around, so I'm the kind of person who feels that it's just enough with my phone and wallet. Even if it's rainy day, I'm the someone to not want to bring an umbrella.

[Musician . My roots]

For music, in the past a friend forcibly tell me to start learning the guitar and that's how i started out, but if we're talking about roots [probably meaning any music background], there's arent really any. Maybe it's because at that time, I never listened to any of the TOP 10 songs in J-POP.

And then, right now if you ask me my reasons for continuing as a musician, i myself think, what or why exactly? If i consider, on the contrary, what i will be doing right now if i'm not a musician, I don't think i can come up with an answer either. There should be times when you don't really have a reason to continue what you're doing.

There's just one thing, for me the guitar is like a game that i can't clear. I have the personality of getting heated up easily and and also calming down quickly, for example, in reality, if i play a game and i can manage to quickly clear it [because he can get heated up playing the game], but in the next instant will be cooled down. Even so, the guitar is something i can't clear no matter how much i practice. It's like when i go up to the highest level i can get, there's always another formiable opponent in front of me. I don't want to lose at the point. So i guess it's kind of interesting in its own way.
