The J-rock quartet discusses flying foxes, future goals and how they’ve changed (or not) since their early days.
Ask any band member what they’d like to venture out into besides music, and chances are you’ll get answers like acting, designing or hosting.
But Shinji, guitarist of Japanese visual kei rock band SID, had a more unconventional and imaginative answer. “I want to be like Tarzan,” he told xinmsn in an interview at M Hotel. But before we began to imagine him swinging from tree to tree in naught but loincloth, he elaborated: “I want to travel the world – climb mountains, cross oceans, and explore the wild.”
While we were still on the topic, lead vocalist Mao brought up the “Tarzan ride” he heard of that “brings visitors across the sea onto an island” right here in Singapore. He was, of course, referring to the flying fox on Sentosa, which, although worthy of being associated with the jungle man, doesn’t zip riders across water. But we’ll let the boys find that out when they try it for themselves during their visit.
In addition to unleashing their inner adrenaline junkies and sampling local delights (they had bak kut teh the night before we spoke), Shinji and Mao, together with their group mates, bassist Aki and drummer Yuya, were in town for Music Matters 2013 on Thursday night. They highlighted the J-rock segment with flumpool and Weaver, bringing the house down with their electrifying performances at Clarke Quay.
The Fountain Stage and Beer Market weren’t the only places SID threw fans into a frenzy. When they arrived at Changi Airport, they were greeted by a very “enthusiastic” mob. Don’t worry, no one was hurt or attempted to harm the boys. In fact, SID even took time to shake hands and sign autographs. “We had fun!” Mao reports.
Speaking of sharing the stage with flumpool and Weaver, we asked who SID considers their biggest rivals in the biz. “We can’t think of any,” Mao admitted, adding that they don’t want to “step on anyone’s toes” by pointing them out. “We want to shake hands with everybody!”
If not compete, what about collaborate? Again, they didn’t have a straight answer, saying they’d love to work with anyone and would do anything. However, we’re guessing they’d especially enjoy making music with legendary bands Luna Sea, Mr Children and Kuroyume, whom they cited as their idols and major influences, along with the now-disbanded Boowy.
This year, SID released their 10th Anniversary BEST album, which celebrates a successful decade that includes numerous Oricon Chart-topping hits, packed concerts at massive venues like the iconic Tokyo Dome, and singles being used as the theme song for several popular anime programs and movies. So how has the quartet changed since their debut in 2003? Well, they haven’t changed in the sense that they’ve always been about making changes (if you get our drift).
“Whenever someone comes up with a new idea for new music, we just go ahead and try it out without having any particular concepts in mind,” Yuya said. “We get bored easily!”
With so much already under their belt, what else does the group hope to achieve in the future? Mao had a simple answer. “First and foremost, we just want to continue making cool music,” he said. “We also want to always have a good relationship within the band, and continue to work together as good friends.”
