For now it is the combination of the trustworthy, older-brother-like Shin-san and the more mischievous little brother Aoi-san. At a first glance a certain unbalance seems to be apparent, however, together they create a rather mysterious and yet exquisite atmosphere. It seems to be something stronger than just a simple Sempai-Kohai-bond between them. Still there is also that aspect between them. Because they get along really well, we bring you thing plain and open conversation of the two.
- It seems rather unusual to see the both of you in one picture.
Aoi [Probably. It’s because we don’t get along at all!! (laughs)]
Shin [Because he is really mean in general. When I called him earlier, he was like [Just leave me be…today had been really exhausting], simply telling me that. I thought, that I am surely not going to invite him a second time! (laughs)]
Aoi [Unfortunately, it is actually true this happened.]
- Well, but on the other hand, such an open conversation also shows, that the two of you are rather familiar with each other, aren’t you?
Shin [Previously, we’d often go for a drink together, though.]
Aoi [Actually, both our homes were rather close. Now they are kind of far away from each other.]
Shin [Certainly. Now it’s rather far apart.]
- So a little back you had been neighbors within walking distance?
Aoi [Yes, we lived pretty close. When Shin-san would return from his marathon, he’d come around sometimes. (laughs)]
Shin [At that time, I’d go running every day either in the morning or the evening. When I had been running in the evening I sometimes came to think, that I hadn’t met Aoi in a while so I would call him to confirm that he was at home and then just stop by.]
- Just to begin with, under what kind of circumstance did the two of you meet for the very first time?
Aoi [The first time we met was actually the time when we (Gazette) entered our recent company.]
- So that was about 5 years ago then.
Aoi [At that time no one of us had just the slightest idea of anything, like we didn’t know how the process of recording was done and such. Of course having Kagrra, as our Sempai-band equaled absolute awesomeness. However, from the very beginning, whenever I didn’t understand something, I’d always go and ask Shin-san, who taught me a lot of different things.]
- Back then Aoi-san still had a very different style to himself, but had he, seen as a Kohai, had a praiseworthy atmosphere?
Shin [He did. He would always very politely ask (favors of questions). He had been kinda cute back then. (bitter laugh)]
Aoi [Right now I’d be more like [Why is this still not working? Would you please hurry and fix it, Shin-san!!] If there was something that changed, it’s that.]
- Someone’s been taking a rather defiant attitude. (laughs) In what kind of situation would Shin-san have to lecture Aoi-san about things, then?
Shin [It would have been mostly on how to do the pre-processing, like [You should rather do it that way!]]
Aoi [At that time, we had gone to the recording studios, where we did the arrangements for the very first time.]
- Something about being more efficient, then!
Shin [Yeah that was my thinking. However, we (Kagrra,) had done those really inefficient things from the beginning just like that also; mainly because there had been no one to give us advice in the first place. So, bit by bit we found out about the best methods to do things on our own. Well, we thought there would be no use to it, if we let our Kohai’s do it just like that, too. So we indented to teach them our know-how about the processes.]
- So this means, they didn’t have to go through the hardship of learning it themselves, like you had to. Somehow this has become a really broad-minded conversation.
Aoi [It does. We were really lucky to have such nice Sempais around us, I’d say. In general, with lots of things I do right now, like using a Mac for the production, if Shin-san hadn’t been there, I still couldn’t do it, probably.]
- So you had been taught by Shin-san how to operate music using a Mac?
Aoi [Yes. Whenever it said or did something, I’d call Shin-san (for help). For example [The cursor is spinning in circles, what is that supposed to mean???].]
- So Shin-san had sort of mutated into a customer-support-center for Aoi-san?
Shin [Well, I was more than just the center, since it eventually brought on some substantial support, I think.]
Aoi [Moreover, it was OK to call 24 hours, too. (laughs) Even when I called in the middle of the night and probably woke him up, he still (took the time to) help me.]
- So that’s the two of you. Are there any similarities between you and what would it be.
Aoi [Well, our gender, we’re both men and then our part in the band would be guitarist, now that’s it.]
Shin [Is there anything else? Probably not, right?]
Aoi [Further, there seem to be quite a few complete opposites between me and Shin-san. See, I am not so much investigating things unlike Shin-san.]
- Shin-san’s perfectionism is much like that of a craftsman, isn’t it? Contrasting that is Aoi-san’s whole hearted curiosity and how he is the type to play out of intuition. That’s my impression.
Aoi [Yeah, I think that fits pretty well.]
- Not just by the matter of character, but also as guitarists the two of you are pretty different, aren’t you? So what would be something you talk about as guitarists?
Aoi [I think there is almost nothing, is there?]
Shin [Yeah, we don’t talk about guitars.]
Aoi [If at all it’s just me mumbling about how some amp would sound, or so. In case I would go on more about things like that, I’d just somehow feel, like I can’t play at all… (bitter laugh)]
- Please don’t be so overly modest in this sense. (bitter laugh)
Shin [It’s like that, though. It seems, as we are both guitarists right now, we don’t really talk about things like how to play a certain way, only because that’s what we have in common.]
Aoi [If we had to tell you, what we talk about when we go drinking together it would only be very trivial things. (laughs)]
Shin [Nothing to be put into a magazine… (laughs)]
- Well, then let’s not dare to research further about this topic and we’ll just drop it.
Aoi [Maybe it’s really just talking about anything and everything around us. It’s just ourselves talking and drinking until morning at those times. (laughs)]
- That does sound like a lot of fun, I’m envious.
Aoi [It is a lot of fun. However, somehow we haven’t done it lately…]
Shin [That’s why I invited you just the other day! (laughs)]
Aoi [But that was different. There had been the PV shooting that day and I really hadn’t been sleeping much at all.]
Shin [Huh? When I invited Uruha, he was way ok with it.]
Aoi [Lately, you really seem to be getting along with Uruha, don’t you? I’d say that’s why I keep my distance a little. Like sulking has its own appeal here… (laughs)]
Shin [Well, this guy (Aoi) is really quick at sulking. (laughs)]
- It seems like it. Anyway, this time we do have a topic we would like to ask all of you in this. In case the two of you had to form a musical unit, what kind of thing would you do? Also, what kind of name would you give that unit? Please tell us about those two points.
Shin [First of all, there would be no guitars.]
Aoi [What? Doesn’t that feel like being deprived of one’s weapon?? There is really nothing like that to hold onto, it seems. (laughs) However, if Shin-san says so, then there really can’t be anything done about it, right?]
- So if there are no guitars, what’s it then?
Shin [Well, I can play the Koto, so we would do something with that.]
- Aoi-san, what are you going to do?
Aoi [Hmm…how about just holding monologues? (laughs)]
- A Koto-Monologue combination? Doing that, would be less of a music unit but more like someone in performing arts…
Aoi: Oh, but if we did that sort of thing, I had a pretty strong rival in Kagrra,’s Nao-san. (Note: Nao-san once said that he would like to be a performer.)
- It’s probably better if we leave it at that, instead of going to try and steal laughter.
Shin [It’s pretty difficult to think of this in terms of a unit in music.]
Aoi [For now, I can’t even write music. That’s Shin-san’s position to do.]
Shin [That’s OK for me, but does that mean I also get all of the royalties? (laughs)]
Aoi [That’s absolutely fine with me. I’ll be whatever Shin-sempai assigns me to be. If my part was to be the holder of the Koto, then that’s OK, too.]
Shin [OK, I get it! Alright, so you can play the guitar then (laughs)]
Aoi [Ha, then I’ll play the guitar.]
- So what about a name for your unit then?
Aoi [NYORO’S]
Shin [Ah, like NYORO, the nick name of our manager?]
Aoi [I think it sounds cute, so what do you think?]
Shin [Alright then, with that name and using the Koto let’s do some really deadly songs! (laughs)]
