SHOXX's Kamijo interview 2015 March

RUKA (Nightmare) x KAMIJO

Admiration

Our irregular column "Room of the Hand", which publishes conversations with people with whom Ruka would like to meet, is published for the ninth time. This time the guest was a man whom Ruka has admired for a long time - Kamijo. This time, oddly enough, the conversation had a lot to do with music, so this interview turned out to be especially valuable (laughter).

Ruka: even when we were on the same stage, I came up to greet you.
Kamijo: When was that?
Ruka: We were still an indies band back then and performed with LAREINE and DEAD POP STARS at Shinjuku LOFT.
K: Oh, back in those days !? (laughter) I only remember that we played SHOCK WAFE together at the CITTA Kawasaki club. Eh, nostalgia ...

Q: Be that as it may, today Ruka can rejoice. After all, Kamijo-san is a person he admires.
R: Yes. You are my senpai, so I suggested this conversation without even knowing how appropriate it was ... But now I am very pleased. Most of all I love "Fleur" (single LAREINE, which was released in 1998 - author's note).
K: I'm very glad, thank you.

Q: Kamijo-san, what is your idea of Ruka?
K: The Man in Black Light on the back cover of SHOXX magazine.
R: ... It sounds kind of dubious (laughter).
K: Glossy photographs are often placed on the back cover, right? And very often there is a photo of Ruki in black clothes, so it seems that he shines with black light (laughter). Of course, I know about the work of Nightmare, and I'm very glad that today I had the opportunity to talk!
R: At 18, I left my home in Sendai. I remember that when I started living alone in Tokyo, I was constantly listening to "Metamorphose" (single LAREINE, which was released in 1998 - author's note).

Q: For moral support?
R: Indeed, so. I had no friends then.
K: Oh, I see. And in fact, this song is somewhat consonant with such a situation.
R: For a whole year after moving to Tokyo, I only listened to the music of LAREINE and Raphael. I've known about LAREINE since "BLUE ROMANCE" (1996 album - author's note), there were great melodies. You probably liked Richard Clayderman (French pianist - author's note)?
K: Yes, I like him. Richard Clayderman, Paul Mauriat (French composer - author's note).
R: My parents love Richard Clayderman, as a child I often had to listen to him! In some interview, I read that you, Kamijo-san, love Klaiderman, and I thought that our tastes are similar, which is why I like your music so much.

Q: Besides, you also like the external beauty of the image?
R: Yes. When I was still in Sendai with Jui (GOTCHAROCKA), I tried to imitate a little. It's embarrassing to speak, but ... I tried to decorate the drum kit. Indeed, both LAREINE and Raphael influenced me a lot.
K: I think at that time LAREINE and Raphael were most striving for melody.
R: Yes, among the many aori-kei and soft visual kei bands.
K: All I wanted was to create beautiful melodies and polish them gradually. In LAREINE, the band members cried themselves while listening to their own songs.
R: Really? Awesome!
K: Because we tried to make them as sad as possible. Sometimes we just cried while performing our love songs ... Although if you think about it now, it was probably some kind of self-intoxication ... (laughter). By the way, does our conversation today have any topic?
R: No, there is no theme!
K: Okay, then ask about anything.
R: What is your hobby?

Q: Well, just like at the bride (laughter).
K: No, it's okay (laughter). My hobby is going to cafes and collecting Apple products.
R: And I love all kinds of mechanisms!
K: The type of people who build computers themselves?
R: Once upon a time I compiled Windows myself (I did not understand what I mean, literally - I did it, I created it. - approx. Transl.). And smartphones at the dawn of existence were also very interesting. Android 1.5 times.
K: I don't know about the android watch, but on the iPhone I took off the back cover and rebuilt something.
R: I like that too ... But lately I liked going to the old tea-houses of Showa.
K: That's how. But smoking is allowed there, isn't it? Since I quit smoking, I can no longer go to my favorite teahouses, now I go to cafes. Ruka-kun, what time do you go to the teahouses?
R: From about 8 to 9 in the morning, there is just the morning set. It has become a daily routine for me lately.
K: There used to be a teahouse near Ikebukuro station, where they served as many toasts and boiled eggs as they wanted, you know it?
R: No, I don’t know. I really love toast.
K: But there you could eat plenty of toast and eggs, not only in the morning, but all day. No matter how I go there, I will definitely meet some of the musicians (laughter). It was 20 years ago. 2015 marks the 20th anniversary of my musical career. Just 20 years ago at this time (interview was conducted in November - author's note) LAREINE was created.
R: That's when it was! And when did the band's activities end?
K: 8 or 9 years ago.

Q: And then the Versailles group was created, in 2013 a solo project began. Kamijo-san, you do not lack a thirst for creativity ...
R: I think this is really great! If I left Nightmare, my heart would just break.
K: It seems to me, Ruka-kun, that if you hadn't become a musician, you could have achieved success in business.
R: No, no, I really am not capable of anything, or maybe it just seems boring to me. Have you ever had a moment when you feel that you are tired of everything?
K: There was a moment when I realized that I was tired of my singing style. After that, I completely changed it.
R: Now you are singing in a low voice, at first I was just amazed!
K: The voice is low, right? But in fact, I sing even higher than before. The voice just got thicker.
R: So that's it!
K: At the time of LAREINE, I seemed to be singing among roses with sharp thorns, although there was a whole field of flowers nearby. That is why it turned out such a gloomy singing ... I am glad that these changes have become noticeable.
R: The voice has changed, and with it, it would seem, the music has also changed. Did you have any doubts?
K: It wasn't. This confirmed that even while we live, we can be reborn. But musicians often become prisoners of their past successes, don't they7
R: Yes, it really is.
K: Actually, LAREINE means a lot to me, but that's why I decided to completely change direction. Perhaps there is something in Nightmare that you want to beat your own best hit? And the best attendance at your concerts, and your favorite song? I think this fight is the most interesting thing.
R: Yes, I also find it interesting.
K: So .. By the way, what is Gianizm (the name of the Nightmare album)?
R: It's just a name.
K: Something like having a gigantic fortitude to go on stage?
R: No, it has nothing to do with this. When we first started the band and had a studio session, that's when we came up with this word. It denotes a large monster like Godzilla that appears in Japan from over the sea. In addition, I liked the sound of the word, so we took it.

Q: And after that we recorded 10 more songs.
R: Yes, we didn't think it would be for long! (laughter).
K: This question worried me for a long time, it's good that I asked.
R: Kamijo-san, what vocalists have influenced you?
K: Himuro Kyosuke.
R: Unexpected!
K: During my school years, I had to sing in a group that sang songs of the BOØWY group, and in order to learn, I watched the videos of their performances and realized what a wonderful person this is!
R: Until that moment, you were not going to become a vocalist?
K: Yes, before that I dreamed of becoming a guitarist and played the guitar all the time.
R: Then you should have admired Hotei-san ... (guitarist of the BOØWY band - approx. Per).
K: I really like his acting, but I could not repeat it (laughter). Ruka-kun, do you like THE BLUE HEARTS?
R: Yes, we do, it was thanks to this group and also Lindberg that I started listening to music.
K: Yes, I also loved to sing it (sings: Linda-Linda).
R: Unexpected!
K: And also: "Jōnetsu no makkana Bara -wo" (hums the song "Jōnetsu no Bara"). Because there are roses, for me it is connected.
R: I see. Kamijo-san, when you compose music, do you write it on the computer?
K: Most often, I first hum it and record it on the iPhone, and then I do the processing on DTM. And it often happens that I start writing with lyrics.
R: Really! And I always write the lyrics after I finish the music!
K: If you start with the lyrics, it's a wonderful chorus. For example .. now I'm going to write a song.
R: Now ?!
K: Yes. (Suddenly picks up a sandwich lying on a plate) “Sandwich from a selection of eggs with salad ...” - now let's put these words to music. (Sings these words in an unexpectedly beautiful voice to a beautiful melody). Well, how?
R: I witnessed an amazing moment !!
K: Unfortunately, this cannot be conveyed in a magazine article. (laughter) But I think that the sense of taste was conveyed, because in the beginning there were exactly the words.
R: Usually there were conversations in this section about everything except music, and today there were unexpectedly many conversations suitable for a music magazine (laughter).
K: How do you usually spend time with your friends?
R: We talk about everything.
K: Yes, when I drink it is the same. I'm becoming a happy person (laughter). Well, let's drink together sometime?
R: Absolutely!
K: What do you usually drink?
R: I almost can't drink, so I usually take some beer.
K: And the wine?
R: I have only unpleasant memories about wine.
K: That's how, but for me beer only evokes unpleasant memories (laughter). This means that we will overcome them together. You can also drink Cassis and Orange (cocktail with liqueur - approx. Perev).
R: Yes, you can drink it. It's good that we found something in common! (laughter). I will be glad to keep you company. And I want to talk about Apple!
K: Oh, this takes at least 12 hours. Yes, I thought I would meet a giant, but it turned out that he was a nice young man (laughter). I'd love to have a drink together.
