Gackt - Positive Mental Attitude
Year 2003
*I:Interviewer
G:GACKT
I: Since 2003 began, have you had any time off?
G: Yes, I did. About a week at the beginning of the year.
I: What did you do during the break?
G: I went snowboarding in Las Vegas.
I: Woah! Las Vegas? You can snowboard?
G: Yeah, if I went somewhere else there would be a lot of Japanese people. So I decided to go to a place that no one would think of - Las Vegas.
I: Yeah, probably no one would think of that. Unless you're talking about gambling.
G: If you have a board, then you can play.
I: Gackt snowboarding in Las Vegas. No one would think of that! *laughs*
G: Yeah, probably. *laughs* I was the only Japanese person carrying a snowboard to Las Vegas.
I: I'm not surprised. *laughs* Do you remember how it was?
G: Yes, it really was a lot of fun.
I: Even more so...the concert at Yokohama Arena on Christams Eve was amazing!
G: Really? It was good?
I: I was impressed!
G: That concert at Yokohama Arena is a page of my 'important' history.
I: Why?
G: When I watched it, I was quite surprised myself. Because everyone in the hall sang along together. I felt that it was "super" and it was a Christmas present that made me the happiest. Very happy.
I: Now that I think about it, the fans cheering/screaming could very well be the climax of that night.
G: Yes, it was a real live. How should I say it...? It's not forcing them to "do it together" or "the feeling must be one" but it was a feeling like "I want to do this." (uh...get it? -D.T.)
I: I just recieved the VDO of the live yesterday. After I watched it, I couldn't press 'STOP.'
G: *laughs*
I: What I want to talk about is the introduction of this VDO that was a horror movie...it gave a good mood you know? Plus there were subtitles in Japanese, especially the part "It's good! Watch it!" It gave me a feeling like "the quality of this tape could also be described by that word." *laughs*
G: *laughs*
I: About the direction and the editing, what was the goal that you had set?
G: Hm....When I was editing, I was kind of mad at myself but was too afraid to say it. *laughs*
I: It must have been difficult getting the editing to be perfect, huh?
G: Yes, it was. Because some pictures that I wanted weren't taken by the cameras...
I: Those pictures don't happen again either.
G: Right? But even so, the finished pictures wasn't like that because "it was all we could do" but it was like that because when editing, we already saw all the pictures. *laughs* (uh....I don't really know what they're talking about here...kinda weird..-D.T.)
I: But looking at the result, it doesn't seem difficult.
G: It actually was very difficult.
I: Now, about your movie (MOON CHILD). Why did you put the song "memories" in it?
G: I felt that it would be an important part of "Jyogen no Tsuki" (the name of the next tour). How should I say it...? I put in "memories" because it reflects the image of the feeling "it's over" while the (legend called "MOON") never ends. It will still have many stories after now which when put onto film would give a different impression.
I: Even though the legend is never ending it reflects the image that it has ended.
G: Yes.
I: In the album "MOON" the new song that was put at the end was "Kimi ga matteiru kara." So it made many people guess that this would be cut out as a new single but it turned out to be a newer one called "Kimi ga oikaketa yume." Which looks at the world on a very bright side...which when you've watched the movie, you will see that it's very delicate and connected to the movie. For you, Gackt, why did you choose this song?
G: If you talk along the lines of what's in the movie, I feel that the picture shown isn't enough. Because "MOON CHILD" is what's in a great legend: "MOON"....So I had the feeling that I "want to write these two songs" : "Kimi ga oikaketa yume" and "birdcage" If you listen to "birdcage" you will immediately understand "why I had to write these two songs." And when put into the movie, I feel that I can project the saddest ending and the most important thing in the movie..."birdcage" is a good song. Among all the songs I've written, "birdcage" is one that I really like. (From here 'till the end they talk about MOON CHILD, Gackt and hyde's movie. So you probably won't get some parts if you haven't watched it -D.T.).
I: Now that I think about it, the opening film of the concert, "Kagen no Tsuki" is similar to Mallepa.
G: *laughs*
I: When did you watch the complete version of the movie?
G: After I came back to Japan for the premiere of the movie, probably a little after new year.
I: Talking bluntly, how were your reactions?
G: Of course, there are parts that need reconsidering. But comparing the quality to other Japanese movies, I think that this movie has very high quality considering the budget we had. Right? Doesn't the budget of the movie matter with the quality the most? If you hear the buget we had for this movie, you might be surprised.
I: Will it only be out in Japan?
G: No, we'll be showing it all over Asia. And we've contacted people to show it in Europe too.
I: Right now I'm feeling that I've learned "positive mental attitude" from you through the legend, "MOON" that was in "MOON CHILD" It might be a little 'too much' but I'd just like to say, "You're truly a wonderful person."
G: We all have our own reasons. Whether it's a reason saying why can't we do it or one saying why is it impossible. But for me, I never cared for these reasons, just: "I can do it? I can't do it?" I don't want to ask everyone's reasons, in fact, I just want to ask "Is there anything you want to try to do?" Because before we do something we think about doing it first right? Therefore, the "how to" is not necessary. And this is where I think many people don't understand.
I: And the new single that you've been talking about too.
G: Um...how should I say it...while we are persuing our dream, there would be many obstacles. Including times where we are sad or feel like giving up but when it's you're dream, no matter what, we "won't bow down." That's what I think.
I: Because there is no time to bow down either.
G: Probably, but I've also had help from certain people along the way too because I feel that I can't do it alone.
I: Is that so? After this you still have the concert tour, "Jyogen no Tsuki" right?
G: Uh...after watching this movie, I think that there will be many questions to answer because there are things that I haven't shown because of the limited time (2 hours). So I couldn't fully describe Sho and Kei who were the heart of the movie. So I thought that it would be better to show it through a concert.
I: Could this concert be called the ending of the legend, "MOON"?
G: In this tour concert, I'm going to make the meaning of "playing music" perfect. I intend to do it, and I intend to keep on doing it.
