Petit Brabancon Barks Interview with kyo - Part 1

Interview: Petit Brabancon debuts! This 5 piece band formed by kyo of DIR EN GREY, yukihiro of L’Arc-en-Ciel, and Miya of MUCC. kyo talks about “Things that sting, things that aren’t warm”
About 4 years ago, DIR EN GREY’s prodigy kyo, and L’Arc-en-Ciel’s rare genius yukihiro began their next act. This new project, where the two’s talents must overlap, is Petit Brabancon.
Petit Brabancon’s first A side single “Koku/Kawaki” (Carving/Thirst) will be released on December 24. The word “loud rock” cannot do justice to their sound which freely mixes the characteristics of the five members, such as metal, punk, and alternative to create a fragile balance. The lyrics are sharp. Composed from the point of view of universal emotions such as good and evil, joy, anger, grief, pleasure, and love, to take shape in extreme words. Loud, noisy, and pop. “Koku/Kawaki” packs in the tastes of all 5 members to give shape to something that is at the cutting edge of these current times.
In Petit Brabancon’s first interview kyo, who was the one who set everything in motion, talks at length about the project’s beginnings, the relationship between himself and yukihiro, the process of creating the songs, and the 5 member’s compositions and lyrics, as well as their vision. Following the release, the band will take the stage for the first time on December 27 at Nippon Budokan for <DANGER CRUE 40th Anniversary JACK IN THE BOX 2021>.
—–It seems that the impetus to form the band came from you, kyo, who reached out to yukihiro about 4-5 years ago.
京: Yes. Personally, I have really liked yukihiro since he was in ZI:KILL, to the point that I think he’s my favorite drummer. He had come to see some of DIR EN GREY’s shows so I had talked to him on multiple occasions. Because of that, I thought that if I were to form a new band, I’d want to do it with yukihiro.
—–I get the feeling that rather than wanting to make a specific type of music with yukihiro, you just wanted to make music with him.
京: It was both those things. I wanted to make this kind of music, and I wanted to do it with yukihiro, so I talked to him about it when the timing felt right.
—–At that point in time, you were already active in 2 bands, DIR EN GREY, and sukekiyo. For what reason did you want to start another new band?
京: From way back when I always felt like I wanted to have 3 or 4 bands. I had plenty of extra time, and also…I didn’t want to have any regrets. I felt strongly that I wanted to try lots of different things with different people. The members of DIR EN GREY are all part of my generation and everyone in sukekiyo is of a younger generation (kohai), so I wanted to try forming a band with the older generation (senpai). Depending on who you do it with the music that you can make and the general image is very different, so I felt very strongly that I wanted to do it if the time should arise. So I just waited for the right timing.
—–What drew you to yukihiro’s music and playing?
京: It was his stoic personality. I don’t really read interviews but from his time in DIE IN CRIES and ZI:KILL, and the times I spoke with him in person, I got the impression that he was a very stoic person.
—–He certainly seems like the kind of person not to speak unnecessarily.
京: Exactly. He seems like he just plays drums and is indifferent to anything else. I really liked him since a long time ago.
—–When you actually reached out to him and tried to meet up, what kind of a response did you get?
京: I thought “he’s just as I imagined he would be”.
—–Did you just ask him to form a band with you out of the blue?
京: Yeah, I think that’s how it went.
—–At that time did you already have a vision or idea of what kind of music you wanted to make with him?
京: I did have an idea of what I wanted to do, so I told him “I like this kind of music” and he replied, “Aah, well, in that case, let’s do it”. That’s pretty much how the conversation went.
—–And what kind of music is that?
京: Well…this is true of sukekiyo and DIR EN GREY as well, but music with lots of different elements in it. On top of that, I wanted to try making music that is eclectic. But if the members are different, then the music will naturally be different too. Because DIR EN GREY and sukekiyo sound very different, I felt that it really would depend on who the members were.
—–Did you think that rather than a unit, forming a band would be the best way to go about it?
京: That’s right. I’m not really interested in units. I think I prefer making music with all the members, yeah.
—–So first you two hit it off, and then you decided on Miya as the third member.
京: I had already spoken with Miya before and had even hung out with him. His music is interesting and I had the impression that he was a guy with a good head on his shoulders. He does a lot of different things, doesn’t he? He also does stuff like DJing, so I think he’s pretty powerful. I think that because of those traits, I figured I’d try asking him.
—–Once Miya had joined the lineup did it give you an even better idea of what kind of music you wanted to write?
京: I can’t write music, so Miya took care of that and it all started to take shape.
I need to go do dishes now because I am an adult with an adult job so I have to go to bed at an adult time so I can wake up and make my adult lunch so I’m not hangry when dealing with my adult boss and speaking my adult Japanese all day, but I have to do adult chores before I can slip into my adult dreams (jk my dreams are very childish). Part 2 should be up around 24 hours from now…that is if all goes according to keikaku (keikaku means plan)!
