After a successful spring tour, HYDE returned to the USA as a support act for STARSET’s tour. The Fillmore was the chosen venue for his September 17th performance in Silver Spring, MD.
As smoke filled the stage and black lights glowed over it, the band members entered the stage. HYDE walked in, wearing a mask reminiscent of The Phantom of the Opera. The mask had specks of blood that shone under the black lights, matching the banner with red and green graffiti that stood behind the singer. The stage had a sudden cyberpunk feel to it.
WHO'S GONNA SAVE US was the opening song for the set. HYDE’s eyes remained closed during the ominous piano intro and opened right when the rest of the instruments joined the song, surprising everyone with his glowing eyes. During the chorus the support members encouraged the attendees to sing along while HYDE did the same, leaning on the microphone stand.
To introduce AFTER LIGHT HYDE asked the crowd, “Are you fucking ready for the screams?” Amid screams he jumped around the stage and stood over the center riser during the peak of the song. When the song ended HYDE thanked the audience.
The energy on stage continued to grow. With a “What’s up Silver Spring!?” the bassist introduced the band, mentioned they came from Japan, and thanked STARSET for the invitation to the tour. HYDE asked everyone how they felt and told them he wanted to see them get “crazy as fuck”. HYDE walked to the left side of the stage and introduced the next song, FAKE DIVINE.
Although the movements for this song were slower paced than the previous two, at times it gave the crowd an opportunity to listen to HYDE’s different vocal ranges. HYDE leaned towards the drum set and interacted with the drummer during the last chorus.
Sirens rang, introducing the next song. HYDE took off his mask and while holding a megaphone he proceeded to sing the next song SICK. The megaphone distorted his singing and added to the feeling of emergency brought on by the sirens. The peak of the song brought a welcomed dose of headbanging.
After the energetic song HYDE asked the crowd if they were having fun and wanted to see STARSET next. After the cheers ensued, HYDE told the fans he was going to teach them what to do during the next song. First the left side of the stage was taught to chant “Oooh Oooh” and then the right side of the stage followed accordingly. Approved by HYDE, the crowd was ready for ANOTHER MOMENT.
The song as well as the band on the stage cued the crowd for their rehearsed participation. During part of the song HYDE got on the left riser and held a stage post and kept singing from that side of the stage.
“Last song!” was heard before the mention of MAD QUALIA, the last song of the night. HYDE stood over the center riser and headbanged to the English version of MAD QUALIA. The song had the most headbanging of the night and ended with HYDE jumping from the drum set back to the stage.
HYDE will be touring the USA until November as a support act for STARSET’s tour. For more dates check https://www.hyde.com/contents/official_live.
